During the winter months we are more susceptible to being sick. I have found several tricks to keep myself healthy. Even with having a balanced and varied diet free of refined food, a healthy sleep pattern, and regular exercise, our immune system can fail us.
At the onset of a cold, I like to drink a hydrosol of juniper mixed with water. The antiseptic property of juniper really boosts my immune system, and often this is sufficient for not getting sick. A hydrosol is a liquid solution that contains water and plant extracts. When you distill a plant for its aromatic quality, you obtain two products: an essential oil and a hydrosol. The hydrosol is a gentle, water-based version of the essential oils. Hydrosols are known for their subtle, soothing effects and can be a great option for those who find essential oils too potent. All the medicinal properties of the plants can be found in the hydrosol. You can dilute the hydrosol in water as a drink. Therapeutic properties: Hydrosols can retain some therapeutic properties of the plant, such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, or antioxidant effects. Juniper is abundant here in Prescott and is a great support of the respiratory and immune systems. I make my own in a glass distiller.
If the sickness is already in my system, I find that a decoction of elderberry will restore my health quickly. Rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and flavonoids, elderberries' antiviral properties are ideal to prevent and alleviate symptoms of colds and flu.
I boil some elderberries in water until half of the water is evaporated, and then once the drink cools down, I will add some raw, high-quality honey to it. To the decoction I can add fresh sliced ginger to make it even more efficient. Also once the decoction is done, I can make an infusion by adding rosemary, thyme, and/or sage. This will have a stronger action on the lungs and throat. If my symptoms involve a sore throat, I like to gargle a warm and very salty solution with maybe vinegar or a drop of lavender essential oil.
I avoid refined sugar and dairy at all costs, I rest, stay warm, and hydrate myself with the herbal tea mentioned before and a smoothie.
My favorite smoothie for extra vitamin C is to mix in a blender organic fresh cranberries with oranges or clementines, dates, and water.
We live in very hectic times full of stress, where exhausting our bodies is very easy. People often forget to keep a convalescence period after being ill. It's important to recover well to not fall sick again later. Even if we feel better, remember to take it slowly by resting and continuing a healthy lifestyle.
